Following the Compass

January 02, 2024
By Denver Daniel

Psalm 119:59,60
When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.

Reminder for the new year - Christians think. God expects us to do more than only know His word, react to life circumstances, or live in a blind faith. A mark of maturity for those who follow Christ will be a thoughtful reflection of how our lives align with God’s word. So where do we begin - the Psalmist provides the answer.

  1. We think. “When I think on my ways…”
A believer will reflect on their “ways” or behavior. Our goal is to be transformed by the renewing of our mind towards Christlikeness. We seek to bring all of our thinking under His authority. (2 Corinthians 10:5). The Lord is interested in His people thinking well.
  2. We align. “I turn my feet to your testimonies…”
The standard or compass for our thinking should always rest on God’s word. We then take what we know and seek to review our lives through that lens. There is a dramatic difference between “what you know” and “how you think.” Mature thinking connects knowledge to practice.
  3. We act. "I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments."
Good thinking inevitably leads to good action. Believers decisively act and unashamedly change course when we realize that our actions and hearts are in misalignment. We act for in that action is life.

What a blessing it is to have a compass upon which to live - a compass that will not fade away and which leads to life. May we all make the time to reflect upon the thinking and behavior of our lives, orient to what God’s word reveals, and then move with courage and conviction to keep that which God has graciously made known.
