Learning Centers

Open Classroom Time involves Learning Centers, which represent ten curriculum areas, plus an opportunity for a self-serve snack.  Learning centers provide a developmentally appropriate environment for independent and small group learning.  Most of the activities are Child Centered, which means children engage independently or in a small group and participate at their level of skill and interest.  We make it a habit to introduce concepts and activities thoroughly before encouraging the children to interact independently.  Normally, no more than one activity requires close teacher supervision, which leaves at least one adult available to monitor the rest of the activity in the classroom.

WHY LEARNING CENTERS WORK WELL- Adapted from Easy Ways to Implement Modality Learning Centers by Linda Kind Goedke and Lucille G. Werner.

  1. They offer an effective approach to individualized learning.
  2. They are motivating.
  3. They assume responsibility about what he/she learns.
  4. They will advance at his/her own rate, a rate that is governed by his/her abilities, interest, and motivation.
  5. They promote curiosity.
  6. They can choose to work in a group situation or to work independently. This helps the child develop independent work habits.
  7. They encourage children to make choices.
  8. They exchange ideas and learn to share responsibility, when working together in centers.   Learning to function as a group is vital to the development of each child.
  9. They promote individual interests, needs, and uniqueness.
  10. They help children discover creative ways of working.
  11. They can reflect the individual learning styles of the children in the classroom.
  12. They promote successful experiences, which will in turn enhance the self-image of the student.
  13. They are fun!!
