ODCS Defeated Brookside

Open Door Christian Schools Defeats Brookside On Scholastic Games High School Quiz With Highest Score Of Season

Elyria, OH February 17, 2009- A radio quiz program featuring academic teams from 18 area high schools continued its nineteenth season of weekly programs Monday on WEOL (AM 930) as Open Door Christian Schools (ODCS) defeated Brookside High School by a score of 320 to 250 on the Scholastic Games. The ODCS team, whose strong performance guarantees it will advance directly to the program’s quarterfinals in April, consisted of Jackie Pence, Philip Linden, and team captain Galen Buttitta. Buttitta won the “Standout Scholar” award as the student judged to have contributed the most to his or her team. Buttitta, a senior this year, won the award five times in previous years, and could possibly equal the all-time record of eight such awards if his team reaches the championship.

ODCS aced the first round to take a slight lead, but Brookside tied the score with a stronger performance in the challenging Current Events Round and took the lead following the first competitive “buzzer” round. It was an impressive come-from-behind rally in that round that gave the victory to ODCS in which Buttitta led the way to outscore Brookside by a nearly three to one margin. Advisor Jackie Schiller leads the ODCS team.

Awards on the program also include a tuition credit allocation supported by area colleges and universities. Each participating school receives a $500 credit to be given to a deserving student, with many additional credits awarded to schools as they win and compete in playoff eliminations. Contributing institutions have included Ashland University, Baldwin-Wallace, Case Western Reserve, Heidelberg, John Carroll, Lorain County Community, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, and Tiffin University, and the College of Wooster is participating for this first time this school year.

Open Door Christian Schools (ODCS), founded in 1976, is a premier co-educational, college preparatory school serving Christian families in Northern Ohio. With an enrollment of 535 students from preschool through high school, ODCS is the largest Christian school in the region, drawing students from 120 different churches of various denominations.
