ODCS Summer 2011 Reading - Grades 1-8
Reading during the summer is critical for students to prepare for academic success the next school year. Elementary and Middle School students will participate again this summer in an incentive-based reading program through our Accelerated Reader (AR) program.
Grades 1 – 8
Beginning June 13, AR will be available for home use during the summer, allowing students to take AR quizzes on the books they are reading from any computer with internet access. By using AR, students and parents can easily keep track of reading progress, and the school will have a record for awarding the incentives for reaching reading goals.
We have established three different reading targets for our students:
- Good
- Typically achieved by reading 30 – 60 minutes per week.
- Students earn a pizza party with their current teacher at the start of school.
- Better
- Typically achieved by reading 90 – 120 minutes per week.
- Students also earn a dress down pass and a homework pass.
- Best
- Typically achieved by reading 3 hours per week
- Students earn an additional dress down pass and homework pass.
- Any points earned in excess of the “Better” level may be used in the end-of-summer AR store (see school website under the library link for details).
- Top readers in each grade level are eligible for bonus prizes.
NOTE: To count a book for the “Good” level, students must still take the AR quiz. If a book does not have an AR quiz, please contact the office to discuss how to apply the book to the summer reading goals.
