Open Door Sports Hall of Fame

Purpose: To pay tribute and extend recognition to those individuals who through the years have contributed to the honor of Open Door Christian Schools in the field of athletics, and who have continued to demonstrate, in their daily lives, the values learned through interscholastic participation in sports while exemplifying the virtues of being people of faith.

Athlete Candidates

  1. Must have graduated from Open Door Christian Schools at least 5 years prior to nomination.
  2. Achieved a distinguished record at the highest level in his or her area of sports endeavor, with consideration given to integrity, sportsmanship, and character in accordance with upholding the calling of 2 Peter 1: 5-7.
  3. Achieved at least two varsity letters in interscholastic competition while attending Open Door Christian Schools.
  4. For a nomination to be considered it must be postmarked by December 31st of each year. Nomination forms are available online or the Open Door Athletic Office. Attachments are not required but can be included, attachments can be letters of support, newspaper or magazine articles, or documents directly related to the nominee's sports achievements and character. Nomination forms will be held for a period of five years after they have been submitted. If after five years the athlete has not been inducted, then the athlete must be re-nominated.


Coach Candidates

  1. Coached for a minimum of ten years or not been involved in active full-time coaching for a minimum of three years.
  2. Compiled an extraordinary winning record or have achieved other outstanding accomplishments, with consideration given to integrity, sportsmanship, and character showing a true spirit of work as exemplified in Colossians 3:23-24.
  3. For a nomination to be considered it must be postmarked by December 31st of each year. Nomination forms are available online or the Open Door Athletic Office. Attachments are not required but can be included, attachments can be letters of support, newspaper or magazine articles, or documents directly related to the nominee's sports achievements and character. Induction Class of 2006
Tony Simboli ('84)

Tony Simboli (’84) has been named as the first athlete to be inducted into the Open Door Sports Hall of Fame. While attending Open Door, Tony was a 4 year letterman for soccer, helping to lead his team to 3 conference championships, and the 1983 ACSI State Championship. Tony was also a member of the very first Varsity Basketball team at Open Door, and earned 4 varsity letters while scoring over 1,000 career points. In track, Tony advanced to the State Track meet in the 400m. Tony holds the distinction of holding two school records; leading career goal scorer in soccer, and a 400m time of 51.1 seconds.

Darrell Dunckel ('81-Present)
Darrell Dunckel has been named as the first coach to be inducted into the Open Door Sports Hall of Fame. Darrell began his career at Open Door in the Fall of 1981 and continues today as the principal in the high school. In his career, Darrell has been the head varsity coach for; soccer, girls and boys basketball, softball, and golf. In addition to his coaching duties, Darrell served as the Athletic Director from 1982-2001. His list of accomplishments are too numerous to list, but include; Soccer Coach of the Year for Lorain County 2003 and for the Western Reserve Conference 1982, 1983, and 1985 and Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for Lorain County in 1996.

Nomination for the Open Door Christian Schools Hall of Fame

The athletic department wants to thank you for participating in our nominating process. The Hall of Fame was established in 2006 in order to celebrate the accomplishments both on and off the field of competition.
The nomination of individuals for induction is a very important part of the Hall of Fame. Please read the following carefully to ensure your nomination is complete and complies with the selection guidelines.

Nomination
Anyone may nominate any individual, living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the Open Door Sports Hall of Fame. Individuals are nominated in one of two categories: Athlete, or Coach. The information provided for the nominee must relate directly to the category selected. For example, if the individual is nominated in the coach category, information on his or her playing career, at any level, is not needed and will not be used for consideration for induction into the ODCSHOF. By the same token, the nomination of an athlete should focus only on his or her accomplishments in the chosen sport.

Selection
All nominees go through a three-tiered screening process. Decisions are made by: the current Varsity coaching staff, Student Council, and the Athletic Director.

For the nomination to be considered, the form must be filled out completely and accurately in the space provided. If the form is not filled out properly, it will be sent back to the nominator for revision. Nominations must be typed or printed legibly on the nomination form provided by the ODCSHOF and returned to the ODCSHOF no later than December 31st of each year. Attachments are not required but can be included. Attachments can be letters of support, newspaper or magazine articles, or documents directly related to the nominee’s sports achievements and character.

All nomination forms will stay on file in the athletic office for a period of five years from the time they are first received. If the nominee has not been selected for induction during that time frame, the individual must be re-nominated for further consideration.
