BIBLE
The focus in third grade Bible is Christ and His Church. Students study the gospels and the book of Acts. Weekly Bible verses are memorized and discussed.

READING
Through the use of a variety of genres, this course will develop comprehension and monitoring skills and introduce literary elements, while the students participate in oral and silent reading.

SPELLING
Spelling is taught from a phonetic point of view. Word families are introduced weekly. Daily activities reinforce the phonics rule. Review of previously learned words is ongoing. There is also an emphasis on learning to spell words that occur frequently in written text, but do not follow phonics rules.

ENGLISH
Grammar and writing are taught through a multi-sensory approach with students as active participants throughout the lesson. Special features of the program include jingles, question and answer flow, sentence building, and the writing process.

MATHEMATICS
Grade 3 math encompasses all four basic operations, measurement, telling time, graphing, and basic geometry and fraction concepts. Manipulatives are an integral part of the course.

SCIENCE    
Science in third grade follows the Ohio Standards. Subjects covered include: classification and life cycles of animals, soil and rocks, ecosystems, forces, and technology.

SOCIAL STUDIES
“Lorain County” is the main concept taught in third grade social studies. The local government, recreation, architecture, landforms, vegetation, and immigration are some aspects studied.

ART
Students in this course will build upon the concepts and vocabulary of the field of art. They will view and analyze artworks of the past, and incorporate what they learn into their own artworks. Drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts are studied as students grow in their knowledge of the media and equipment of art.

MUSIC
Music for the third grade student includes activities such as singing, listening, playing, reading, dramatizing, and performing. These activities are designed to help the child become more aware of musical symbols and notation, mechanics of music, rhythm patterns, simple harmonies, pitch, and mood changes. The importance of music in the everyday lives of various groups of people is also instilled in the third grade student.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical education for third graders will include activities designed to develop: intermediate sports skills, an ability to recognize superior effort/performance, physical fitness, and a knowledge of safety considerations in games/sports. These objectives will be achieved through a program of individual and group activities, relays, structured games, and conditioning exercises.

COMPUTER LAB
Each third grade class will meet once a week throughout the school year. The course is designed to teach students about keyboarding, computers, and software applications. There will be hands-on projects that can be integrated with the regular classroom curriculum.
