BIBLE
The sixth graders are introduced to the elements of inductive Bible study in this curriculum. Bible memorization is also emphasized.

READING
Students learn to analyze, interpret, and critique an author’s intended message. Students discuss and communicate their analysis in written and oral form including: the author’s choice of plot, character development, dialogue, vocabulary, and scene description. Students are evaluated through written essays, oral presentations, quizzes, tests, and appropriate projects.

SPELLING
Sixth grade spelling focuses on lists of related words using prefixes, suffixes, and other various endings. The words increase in difficulty as the year progresses. Every sixth lesson is a review lesson reinforcing past concepts.

ENGLISH
Grammar and writing are taught through a multi-sensory approach with students as active participants throughout the lesson. Special features of the program include jingles, question and answer flow, sentence building, and the writing process.

MATHEMATICS
The sixth grade math curriculum focuses on operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Geometry and introductory algebra are also covered. Classroom drills, homework, and regular testing reinforce the concepts taught.

SCIENCE AND HEALTH    
Sixth grade science includes the study of life science, earth science, physical science, and the human body. Topics are presented through study of the text, various activities, demonstrations, experiments, and films.

SOCIAL STUDIES

In Social Studies, students study the history of the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Australia are all considered. Classes study the text, observe films, host outside speakers, and complete monthly projects.

ART
This course will survey western and cross-cultural art forms. The students will learn to use their individual skills and creativity, along with knowledge gained from art history, to enjoy a new insight and appreciation for the world of art. Drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts are included as a part of this course.

MUSIC
Students will learn to use their musical talents to glorify God. This class is designed to improve the student’s singing ability, music reading ability, and knowledge about music.

SIXTH GRADE BAND
This class is a continuation of the learning process started in the first year band class. Students will learn to use advanced rhythmic techniques, work on multi-part songs, and gain the knowledge necessary to function in the junior high instrumental music format. One year of band training or six months of private lessons is a required prerequisite for this class. Home practice time is also required for this class.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education for sixth graders will consist of a concentrated exposure to four team sports and one dual sport. The focus of the classes will be on skills development, team strategy, and understanding the rules and traditions associated with each particular sport. In addition to the athletic/sports emphasis, conditioning, good sportsmanship, and physical fitness will be emphasized.

COMPUTER LAB
This is a nine-week daily course that will utilize the keyboarding skills learned in the fifth grade. Students will be taught about the history of computers, as well as computer safety and ethics. They will spend time creating documents using Microsoft Word and presentations using PowerPoint. Using search techniques with the Internet will also be covered, if time permits. The ultimate goal will be to use what is taught in class to create products that correspond to the regular classroom.
