READING
The second grade reading curriculum is largely a phonetic program using
meaningful literary content. It is a program designed with explorable
concepts that will encourage the learner to think, raise questions, and
become good readers. All students are challenged to stretch and to
grow, each at his or her own level. Children learn to read critically
incorporating God’s values into the literature.

SPELLING Spelling at the second grade level focuses on a systematic development of skills. Beginning with phonetically spelled words, the curriculum progresses to encompass word patterns. Emphasis is placed on learning principles that apply to multiple word groups, allowing the student to learn the regularities of spelling. This enables the student to spell a greater number of words. Spelling and Vocabulary – Grade 2. Houghton-Mifflin, 1998.
ENGLISH Grammar and writing are taught through a multi-sensory approach with students as active participants throughout the lesson. Special features of the program include jingles, question and answer flow, sentence building, and the writing process. Shurley-English. Shurley Instructional Materials, 2000.
MATHEMATICS The second grade math curriculum stresses knowledge of simple addition and subtraction facts to 18. The students will learn to tell time to five minutes, measuring, weighing, and graph making. Simple geometry is introduced, in the form of shapes and patterns. Students will see God’s precision in His design of our world and lives. (Matthew 10:30, Psalm 90:12) Larson, Nancy. Saxon Math 2. Saxon Publishers, Inc. 2004.
SCIENCE Great science education fosters an attitude of curiosity and a desire for understanding all that God has created for us to enjoy. In second grade we cover many areas such as life science, earth science, physical science, and space and technology. Each category is broken up into units. (Example: Life Science – studying Ohio plants and animals.) The children learn thinking and problem solving skills that will last a lifetime. (Colossians 1:16, 17) Scott Foresman. Science: See Learning in a Whole New Light. Pearson Education, Inc. 2006.
SOCIAL STUDIES Second Grade Social Studies covers neighborhoods and communities. Examples of people from other countries are included in the units. These are then used to integrate God’s teachings on how to relate with people of different backgrounds. Other areas covered in the curriculum are: history, geography, economics, citizenship, and the humanities. People Together - Adventures in Time and Place. McGraw Hill. 2001.

The fine arts of drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts are included to help students learn to use their skills and talents to honor the Lord.
MUSIC Music for the second grade student includes activities such as singing, listening, playing, reading, dramatizing, and performing. These activities are designed to help the child become more aware of musical symbols and notation, mechanics of music, rhythm patterns, simple harmonies, pitch, and mood changes. The importance of music in the everyday lives of various groups of people is also instilled in the second grade student.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education for second graders will include activities designed to develop: elementary skills in selected sports; an ability to abide by rules; the value of teamwork/encouragement; and physical fitness. These objectives will be achieved through a program of individual and group activities, relays, structured games, and conditioning exercises.
