READING
Through the use of a variety of genres, fourth graders will develop reading strategies, vocabulary, and comprehension. Choosing materials appropriate for researching a particular theme is emphasized to promote thinking and decision making skills. We believe these skills are necessary for interpreting and understanding the Bible as well as other literature.

Lessons are applicable to the students’ daily lives as they practice skills related to: the calendar, time, measurement, temperature, money, and problem solving.

SCIENCE
The fourth grade science course deals with the study of weather, earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, plants, physical and chemical changes, and the use of technology to improve human lives. Experiments are designed to use the scientific method. Emphasis is placed on the fact that God is the creator and sustainer of our world. He has uniquely designed man, animals, plants, the earth itself, and the solar system in interdependent roles. Man is God’s special creation, created for a relationship with God. A hands-on approach to science is emphasized.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Fourth Grade Social Studies is an emphasis on Ohio’s history, inventors, and state symbols. An overview of interdependence, economics, humanities, and citizenship is covered in every unit. International lessons are integrated into the chapters for comparison of major landforms. Decision making and citizenship skills are discussed as responsibilities not only of an American citizen, but also of a Christian. Human government is ordained by God, so Christians are to take an active stand exercising their rights as citizens.
