Students begin instrumental instruction at ODCS with recorders in the 4th grade. Students may then choose an instrument and participate in the 5th and 6th grade bands. Middle School band is also an elective class for 7th and 8th grade students.
The high school band travels to various area high schools and fairs to perform in band showcases and competitions. Winter and spring quarters are standard concert band. Concert Band includes study, practice, and development as well as performance.
Students develop skills in the areas of team building, musical skills, rhythm accuracy, tone production, and many other musical elements stressed through participation in ensemble playing. Band camp, outside trips, concerts, and contests are mandatory events designed to allow students to develop and use their musical skills. High school students will also have the opportunity to take part in jazz band, pep band, handbells, and graduation band.
The ODCS Band Program is under the direction of Mr. Christopher R. Clark who has over seventeen years of teaching experience. Through his vision, the ODCS Patriot Marching Band has come in to existence. The band is a military style marching unit with tonal bass drums. Currently, there are 95 members in the band out of a 100 plus-member high school. The marching band has performed in New York City, Virginia Beach, Columbus, Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Disney World, Kings Island, and St. Louis. The Music Booster Club (MBC) is made up of volunteer parents who have dedicated themselves to assisting the band to succeed in its desire to perform music all over the Eastern United States. Music booster parents assist the band by helping lunch programs, band show supervision, chaperoning trips, fundraisers and uniform maintenance.
