Sixth Grade Band Syllabus

The Sixth Grade Band program is an exciting and challenging place for any music student.
Each student Needs:

  • Their instrument
  • Essential Elements 2000 Book 1
  • Essential Elements 2000 Book 2
  • A pencil
  • A music folder
  • A box of reeds (sax, clarinet)
  • Oil for slides and valves
  • Grease for corks and valve slides
  • Name tag for instruments
  • Rag for brass/swab for woodwinds

These items must be present for each and every band class. A grade will be taken on random days at the beginning of class. Students missing one or more items will receive a zero for this part of their grade for that day.

Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each school week.

Instruments will be stored in room 501 (music room). Instruments must go back and forth between each day of class. Instruments left will result in a deduction of a point from the weekly grade will occur.

Music is an important part of a child's life and should be regarded as important in the family's weekly routine. To succeed a child must realize you feel music is important as well. Make their practice a part of their homework that you check up on regularly.

Sixth graders should be practicing in excess of 150 minutes during the week at home. You are encouraged to listen and show your interest at least twice a week. Practice done in one lump sum or twice in a given week will only result in daily struggles at school. Practice should be split into 3, 4, or 5 days slots. This will develop muscle strength and an ability to understand the music homework give weekly.

Concerts are required test experiences. Missing a concert will be considered a failing grade unless there is a family death or a MAJOR illness. Vacations and other such excuses are not generally considered excused absences. All requests to be excused from concerts for illness, death, or other events must be in writing. Concerts are very important team experiences. All requests which are not related to death or illness will be reviewed and responded to promptly.

Please check the schedule below
with your own home calendar for conflicts:

ODCS Christmas Concert

December 15, 2009

Elementary Spring Concert

May 6, 2010

These are very important dates. Please consider them mandatory. Concert dress is also very important and is as follows:

Girls

Girls are required to wear a skirt, dress, or one of the campus wear jumpers.

Boys

Boys are required to wear a shirt with a tie and a pair of non-cargo style dress pants.

If a problem arises with a student's dress, an administrator will be asked to make a judgment and to decide whether the student should participate in the concert.

Grades will be determined from the following:

Weekly practice sheets are to be turned in on Thursdays. If there is to be no class Thursday, then practice sheets will be double for the following week. Practice sheets must be signed by the parent to be counted as a grade. Late practice sheets will be accepted only on the Monday of the following week. Practice times must be recorded on the proper sheet, or they will not be recorded for a grade.

Practice times and corresponding grades:
Minutes Percent Points Awarded
150 100% 150
135 90% 135
120 80% 120
105 70% 105
90 60% 90

Students must take care of the sheet music that is given to them by the music department. This music is their text book for the class. Fines will be issued if the music is damaged. Please remind them to take special care of the music.

Parents, it is a fact of life that students tire easily of work that does not produce a quality product immediately. Many students leave the program at the first sign of trouble and therefore never achieve their potential. As parents it is our job to realize this and help them to strive for excellence. Be ready for your child's desire to leave and help them push through these times and move onto a beautiful end product.

Finally, practice of less than 90 minutes a week does not prepare a student for class. This will also cause a student to become frustrated and have more of a desire to leave the program. Since band is a year-long class, it is important to keep the student practicing so they will not be overtaken by the desire to leave. Please be on guard and help your student get in a more appropriate practice time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mr. Clark.
