Band Camp Guideline | Print |

Band camp is a time of hard work, learning new ideas, jelling together as a team, and having fun. All of these elements are important parts of band camp. In order to make camp as fun and smooth as possible we must have some important guidelines to follow to make the week go along properly. Please take the time to read the policies below to make sure that the week at camp is a fun and a safe one.

1. No mixed company in cabins at any time.
Students should meet together in the dining hall ball fields or other open areas to talk.
  • First infringement = No warning students will lose free time.
  • Second infringement = Call home and possibility of being sent home at the parent's expense.
2. Dress code:
Students should show modesty when preparing clothes for camp. When in doubt, please refer to the ODCS Student Handbook. Please remember that ladies swim suits should be one piece. Students must cover midriff, must have 9 inches of fabric on their shorts, ladies must not show cleavage, or wear spaghetti strap blouse.
3. Students must wear close toed SHOES with a back on the marching field, not athletic sandals. Students may not wear flipflops on the marching field. Students may wear these during the free time and at indoor sit down rehearsals.
4. Please assume that band camp will provide only food, a cabin and a bunk. You should bring at least the following:
  • Bible
  • Sleeping bags
  • Swim suit, one piece for ladies. As required by Heartland Retreat Center.
  • Shower needs, towels, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.
  • Money for pop and candy during free time. (Optional)
  • Clothes for warm and cool weather. (Rain gear, as well)
  • At least two pairs of shoes. (band shoes will make #3)
  • Tanning lotion, bug repellent, sunglasses, and hat for sun protection.
  • Any other items you might bring for an outdoor camping experience.
  • Instruments, all your band music, extra reeds, oil, lyres, flip folders, two pencils / highlighters, band shirt, and band shoes.
  • A great attitude! Students with great attitudes are great leaders and great positive influences on all others around them!
5. Clean cabins are very important. Students are expected to keep their cabins clean at all times. Now this does not mean military style spotless, but there are some very important expectations that must be met:
  • Beds must be neatly made.
  • Suitcases should be stored under a bed, or at the end of the bunk. Clothes should be in the suitcase, NOT spread across the floor or the bathroom.
  • Floors should be swept clean. Food items will draw mice, so trash should be emptied daily.
  • Clothes and towels, if they must be left out, should be hung up neatly.
  • All areas around the cabin area should also be kept clean and free of litter.
  • All restrooms must be cleaned daily, free of litter and swept free of dirt.
  • WRITING ON THE CABIN WALLS IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
  • Students not willing to follow the clean cabin guidelines will receive extra duties at camp and lose of their free time for the next day.
6. Students will be expected to help with the operation of band camp. Each student will be assigned a variety of duties, such as: cleaning the dishes, straightening the dining hall, setting up the rehearsal hall, and any other jobs needed.
7. Meal times: Breakfast - 6:45 a.m. ; Lunch - noon ; Dinner - 6:00 p.m.
Attendance at meal times is mandatory. All students must be on time to meals as well. Permission to leave the dining hall must be granted by Mr. Clark. (Being late to a meal will result in the assigning of laps, so please plan ahead.)
8. Chapel will be held after the evening rehearsal and is mandatory for all students. Please remember that students are expected to listen and should not talk during the speaker's time.
9. Grade:
Students must remember that band camp is a graded experience. Students are expected to have music prepared and have a good attitude for learning. Grades for camp come from the following areas:
  • Music memorization
  • Timeliness to assigned practices
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Keeping a Christian attitude (not fighting, gossiping, or other non-Christian activities).
